If you can, hold down the cd power on switch
(its usually a micro switch operated by the lid/table)
so as to make the turn table spin without
having a CD on the little turntable and,
look to see if the lazer head moves up and
down a few times (Looking for focus)
As you know, the cd disk plays from the middle out towards the edge.
So as soon as power is applied the lazer head should move in towards the
turntable motor (if its not already there)
If it is already in the middle, try to move the motor gears by hand,
so as to move the lazer head out towards the disk edge,
and the apply power and watch it move back in.
If the lazer bobs up and down and the lazer moves to middle then,
it probably is the lazer thats faulty.
( I use the corner of my hankie which I wet with water, to gently rub the lens , then with a dry corner, gently polish it off)
It s possible to see if the lazer is glowing by using a video camera ,
some of them pick up IR light, test with a remote control transmiter hand set,
or you can buy those little sticks that glow under IR light .
(About £10 in UK.)
Lazers can be brought from Willow Vale Electronics in UK
(web address link on my website), they range from about £25 to £10.
